Will joined the Falcons at the start of the 2018-19 season and instantly showed his commitment to the club by coming on an away trip after just one training session, scoring four goals in the match, and even politely tolerating then Captain Jimmy’s pop quiz on the train up (‘Where does the M55 start and finish?’).
On the pitch Will’s energy and movement and finishing are a constant headache for defenders and he is firmly fixed on landing top scorer in back-to-back seasons. Off the pitch his singing is a constant headache for his teammates, for in a cruel twist of fate, Will is blessed with the knowledge of the lyrics to every pop song released this century and cursed with the vocal range of his secret hero, Alan Partridge.
Will enjoyed a fantastic tour in Rome, picking up a Division 1 silver medal and missing out on the golden boot by one goal. In much the same way the public fell for Gazza’s tears in Turin, a slightly smaller audience was equally touched by Will’s authentic display of emotion in Rome. We look forward to a season of eye rolling at being told to ‘Soar!’ before the start of each match.
1) Why did you join the Falcons?
Moving to London I was looking to find an inclusive and competitive football club to start playing 11 a side with again after a couple of years off since Uni. For the club to have a great social side too was important, so I was glad to see that was the case here!
2) What’s your best memory of the Falcons on the pitch?
It would have to be making the final of the Eurogames 2019 in Rome this year. It was our 5th game in two and a half days playing in 36 degree heat and every single player out there was giving it everything they had and really fighting for it. When we won on penalties thanks to Matt’s heroics in goal, I don’t think I’d ever been prouder of a football team that I’d played for before.
3) What’s been your best memory of the Falcons off the pitch?
There have been lots of good ones here with some great nights out up and down the country. But for me it has to be when we ended up in an impromptu 12 hour session at Wandsworth’s premier Irish pub Tir Na Nog where the owners started wheeling out party food for us, offering us the chance to be DJs for the night and Chris Pate’s passionate rendition of Don’t Speak by No Doubt stealing focus from the perplexed live music act that had been booked for the evening.
4) Who’s your most annoying teammate?
Jimmy and I’ll be stunned if anyone picks anyone else. Eternally winding up team members by telling you to “have a bite on that”, cheering like a 4-year-old every time United manage a shot on target or making you late to games as he doesn’t know what third gear is, the reasons are literally endless. He also heralded Ole as the saviour and don’t let him try to deny it.
5) Why should someone join the Falcons?
If you’re looking to play some competitive 11 a side football at an inclusive club with a cracking social atmosphere, then this is the club for you, so get down to training on Tuesdays at Kennington Park!
