Hat trick for the captain

Falcons cruised past London Koreans to make it three wins out of four as Jimmy scored three and set up two in a 5-0 win.

The previous week had seen the team battle superbly before conceding a late goal against the free-scoring league leaders, Royal Wells. Fortunately, there was only the need for one enforced change as Ben returned for the absent Brady while Stefan also returned to the starting line-up as Lee dropped to the bench.

Koreans started pretty well, relying on pace on the counter to try and get through the Falcons defence. However, on the one instance that they did, the linesman's flag came to our rescue.

It's fair to say that it took us a little while to settle, with some poor passing and lack of communication at times. That said, we had several chances from the edge of the area but none that failed to hit the target.

Fortunately we went into half time in the lead when the ball dropped to Jimmy in the area. His shot smashed against the crossbar but Toby did what all strikers should do, following in to make it 1-0.

There was a temptation to make changes to the formation in order to provide more cover down the wings but the reluctance to change while we were winning paid off in a second half which saw Falcons dominate the remainder of the game.

Just three minute into the second half, the ball was laid off to Jimmy on the edge of the area and he sidefooted a shot low and into the goal off the post to make it 2-0.

Then, on 55 minutes, Pete's free-kick caused problems for the opposition goalkeeper and it was Jimmy again who found the back of the net for 3-0.

By now, Lee and the returning Will had entered the pitch to give a rest to Steffen and Rob. The extra energy helped as Falcons began to counter attack effectively. The fourth goal came from down the right wing as the captain laid the ball off for Kieran to score his third goal of the season from ten yards.

We continued to rotate the substitutes as Jimmy, George and Toby all took breaks and the fifth goal came from the penalty spot after a disgraceful two-foot challenge on the back of Lee's ankle which didn't even result in a booking. There was only one candidate for the spot kick as Jimmy was allowed the opportunity to complete his hat trick, which he did with the minimum of fuss.

Koreans caused a couple of problems late on through set pieces but it was a day in which the workrate across midfield left the defence and goalkeeper with very little to do.

Falcons finished the scoring at five on a very satisfactory day for the home team.

After a first league game which saw a shoestring team ripped wide open, Falcons have quickly set their stall out as a very competitive team in the Wimbledon and District Football League. Three wins out of four and two clean sheets out of three show that we've made a real improvement as we've adapted to the higher standards of our new competition. So far, it's been a great experience that the whole club is enjoying and we look forward to the second half of the 2018/19 season.
