Falcons finally notched their first league win of the season in the GFSN by comfortably defeating Nottingham Lions 2-0 on Wandsworth Common.
As dominant as Falcons were in the first half, chance after chance went begging as a series of corners and one on one chances failed to trouble the goalkeeper. The back four kept things nice and tidy to prevent the visitors from having a sniff at goal but at half time the scoreline was 0-0.
A slow start to the second half saw Lions have their best chance of the game with a shot from the edge of the area going over the bar. Falcons continued to fluff every chance until the breakthrough finally came on 70 minutes when Kaz picked the ball up mid-way inside the Nottingham half and struck a fine left foot shot from 20 yards into the corner.
The defence continued to hold off any serious threat from the opposition and Falcons sealed the victory with five minutes to go when Kaz’s second came courtesy of a deflected low shot inside the box.
So, a first league win of the season and Falcon’s first GFSN league clean sheet in 14 months made for a highly satisfactory afternoon. Our destiny is not in our own hands going into the final round of fixtures as a win against Saltire next weekend will not be enough if Nottingham take a point off HotScots. It’s going to be an interesting end to the season!
