Frustrated Falcons slip to narrow defeat

London Falcons were unable to make it back-to-back wins following the restart of their Wimbledon and District Div 3 campaign, after they fell to an unlucky 2-1 defeat in a bruising and physical encounter against Active Sports.

Falcons XI: Matt H; Jimmy, Charlie, Jeff, Joe; Baptiste, Jim P, George (c); Marshall, Will, Stevie

Subs: Duncan, Rob, Matt D

Goals: Baptiste

Putting the visitors on the back foot from the first whistle, the Falcons’ high press caused chaos for the Active Sports’ defence, who struggled to match the hosts’ intensity and fight in the early stages. Unable to force a breakthrough, it was soon the Falcons’ turn to withstand a wave of pressure, with Active Sports squandering a couple of gilt-edged opportunities to make it 1-0 with some swift breaks down the flanks almost breaching the Falcons’ defence.

Finally it was the hosts who took the lead. Winning a 50/50 on the edge of the box, Will’s ball fell to Baptiste, whose ambitious deflected effort evaded the Active Sports keeper to give the Falcons the lead.

Sadly though this lead was short-lived, with a well-worked effort through the midfield culminating in a fine finish from the Active Sports striker, whose goal sent the teams in level at the break.

What ensued was a gritty second half, with both sides having chances to sneak a lead. As both managers rang the changes, Duncan, Rob and Matt D all came on for the Falcons in an attempt to find a winner. But sadly it was the visitors who were to finally edge it with just five minutes to play. After a foul on the edge of the box was punished with a free-kick, which was promptly dispatched to give Active Sports the win. Despite a late rally, the Falcons were unable to make it two unbeaten since the restart and will now look to get back to winning ways against Wimbledon Saints this weekend!
