Debutants shine as Falcons sink Surbiton

A goal for substitute Duncan and a Player of the Match performance from Joe on their first Falcons’ outings helped the team kick off their rescheduled Division 3 campaign with a 3-1 win over Surbiton Eagles.

Falcons XI: Matt; Danny, Charlie, Jeff, Joe; Jimmy, Jim P, George (c); Marshall, Will, Stevie

Subs: Duncan, Pete

Goals: Stevie, Will, Duncan

Following the restart of the Wimbledon and District League Division 3, the league’s eleven sides have been split into two groups, with the top two from each side making it to a finals stage.

The Falcons pushed hard from the start, with the front three leading a press that kept the Eagles penned into their defensive third for large periods of the first half. The visitors made the most of this pressure with a fine passing move that gave them the lead just before the half hour mark. It started with a fine ball down the line from Danny, which found Will, whose deft through ball over the top was met by Marshall, who in turn drilled the ball across to Stevie who slotted home a cool, first time finish.

For the rest of the first half, the Falcons looked rarely troubled and they were fastest out of the blocks after the restart too. Having been denied an appeal early on in the game, the balletic Stevie was causing issues for the Eagles back line again, but this time the referee decided that there had been contact and awarded a penalty for a clear foul. Will stepped up to convincingly slot the ball into the bottom right hand corner and double the Falcons’ advantage - yet this two goal cushion was brief. With their first corner post restart, the Eagles capitalised on confusion in the Falcons’ box to scramble a ball in and make it 2-1.

With potential for nerves to jangle, the Falcons refused to sit deep and indeed displayed how attack is the best form of defence. Capitalising on the space left by the attacking endeavourds of the roaming Eagles’ full-backs, Will spotted the run of Duncan, whose superb first touch took down a tricky lofted pass, before dispatching the ball into the net for a debut goal. It was a great team display across the field, with Joe’s POTM a reflection of a display that was as solid at the back as it was going forward. The result leaves the Falcons top of their mini league after one game - the perfect start after four months on the sidelines!

Up next is Active Sports on Saturday, as we look to make it two wins from two!
