Newcastle defeated, Yorkshire awaits!

London Falcons continued our impressive start to the season with a third consecutive victory that saw us move into the next round of the GFSN Cup.

Falcons XI: Matt; Kieran, Pete, Ed S, Charlie, Vuong; Jim, Steve, Joe; Will (c), Rob. Subs: Abdul, Steff Man of the Match: Steff and Jim Goals: Stevie, Vuong, Will, Steff (x2)

On a windswept Saturday afternoon, the Falcons kept up their hot start to the season on what felt like our first autumnal outing of the campaign.

A bright opening period saw the Falcons go ahead early, with Will linking up with Stevie who bagged his first Falcons goal with a close range effort. Soon it was two, with Will again as provider, this time finding Vuong who marked his first start for the team with a lovely curling effort that caught a slight deflection into the right hand corner of the net.

However, this two goal lead was not extended despite a bucketload of chances, and then a well-worked Newcastle set piece saw their man free to head home into the Falcons net with their only chance of the half, meaning that at the interval only a goal separated the sides.

It didn’t take long for us to restore the two goal advantage thanks to the returning Steff. Having been out injured for a long time, there was a collective sense of joy as the German slotted home from close range after a lovely touch from Abdul. Soon it was Steff who turned provider, as the Falcons made it 4. Seeing Will running through, Steff played a neat through ball that saw Will able to slot past the onrushing Newcastle keeper who had come well out of his area.

There was still time for a fifth as the Newcastle keeper couldn’t get a grip on a looping deflected effort from Steff, who capped off his return to the team with a joint Man of the Match performance alongside Jim Pomeroy.

Despite not being at our best, it was a comfortable win against a Newcastle team a little frazzled after an early start to the day. The victory means a home tie in the first round proper against Yorkshire Terriers FC in three weeks.

If you fancy joining the squad, why not come down to training at Kennington Park, where we meet every Tuesday night at 7:45pm! We play league matches on Saturday afternoons, which means Soccer Special and drinks in the pub afterwards!
