2019/20 Player Profiles: Jimmy

Name: Jimmy Whelan

Age: 30

Position: Centre Midfield

Committee role: Manager

Favourite player: Gary Neville

Hailing originally from Salford, Jimmy (né James) Whelan has sat at the heart of the Falcons midfield for the past two seasons. His industry in the middle of the park is topped only by the levels of surly Mancunian conversation that he delivers to his team throughout games.

Known best for his hard work on the pitch as much as he is for his soft spot for Dele Alli, Jimmy has made the step up from captain to manager this year and his relishing the chance to see if he can emulate the managerial career of his hero Gary Neville.

When off the pitch, Jimmy enjoys reminding everyone how Manchester is the best place in the world (despite living in London for 6 years), thrilling everyone with his anecdotes on the latest craft beer that he has tried. and pretending to only listen to the Arctic Monkeys, despite suspiciously knowing lots of the words to hits from the likes of Katy Perry and Little Mix.

1) Why did you join the Falcons?

I wasn’t really enjoying my football team at the time and stumbled across the existence of inclusive teams, the rest, as they say, is history.

2) What’s your best memory of the Falcons on the pitch?

In terms of importance for the clubs future, it’s finishing 4th in our debut season in the Wimbledon & District League. At the time it was a leap of faith having only previously played in the LUL league, but it was the right decision and we haven’t looked back. Finishing 2nd in Rome is a close second.

3) What’s been your best memory of the Falcons off the pitch?

The impromptu and now infamous 12 hour session in Tir Na Nog following a dismal cup defeat, which was certainly a distant memory after that night!

4) Who’s your most annoying teammate?

I've had to pool three...Will Oster, William Oster and Mr William Oster

5) Why should someone join the Falcons?

We are a committed, competitive and team-focussed bunch that love football. Soccer Saturdays in the pub and the inevitable nights out that ensue aren’t bad either...
